Saint-Saëns composed this work in November 1864, based on thematic material he had sketched a few months earlier while participating in the Prix de Rome competition. His original intention was for this piece to serve as the third movement of his Violin Concerto in A major, Op. 20, but ultimately, it remained an independent work. The premiere took place in Paris at the Salle Pleyel on April 27, 1867, with Sarasate as the soloist and François Seghers (1801–1881) conducting. The first version of the piece to be published was the arrangement for violin and piano by Georges Bizet, made at Saint-Saëns’s request and released by Hartmann in 1870. The orchestral version appeared later with Durand, first as separate parts (in February 1875), then as a full score (in August 1879). Opus 28 is divided into four sections (Andante malinconico – Animato – Allegro ma non troppo – Più allegro), but in reality it adopts a two-part structure: Saint-Saëns’s Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso in A minor begins with a melancholic serenade serving as the Introduction, followed by a joyful Rondo that is highly virtuosic and tinged with Spanish influences.
