The dam at Kangaskoski, a concrete wall that had drowned this stretch of the Hiitolanjoki River since 1925, had been demolished just weeks earlier. The rubble was barely cleared. The construction equipment was still on site. And in the freshly exposed rapids below, salmon were already building nests. Wild landlocked Atlantic salmon, Finland's most endangered migratory fish, were digging into gravel that had been buried under stagnant reservoir water for nearly a century. Females fanning their tails against stones that had not felt flowing water since before the Second World War. Five spawning nests confirmed before the restoration crews had even finished their work.
