I saw a C64 cover of a DELTARUNE Chapter 5 secret boss theme (no spoilers ;) putting text here so the smily face doesn't look like it has a double chin), and that somehow led me into a playlist of people doing similar “what if DELTARUNE was on X retro hardware” covers/remixes. That idea stuck with me as somebody who does a LOT of that lol, and I wanted to try it myself using the Sega Genesis sound system. I ended up choosing Hammer of Justice specifically because it had a very immediate contrast for me on first listen. The intro didn’t feel good to me and actually kind of put me off the rest of the track on my initial listen, but there WERE moments in it that I couldn’t ignore; notably the banjo solo with the Freedom motif we have all come to know and love, which got stuck in my head for a long time afterwards. That contrast made it a really interesting candidate to revisit through the constraints of Genesis hardware I know oh so well, because... perhaps I could fix it? What changed everything for me was having to actually break it down properly for the Genesis sound limits (5 FM channels, 1 DAC channel (that doubles as an FM channel but I rarely use it) and 3 PSG channels). Instead of just slapping a soundfont on it, applying lots of slides & vibrato while ignoring actual limitations and calling it a day like a lot of fake Genesis covers do (these can and have sounded amazing don't get me wrong! I just feel like it's a lie to call it a Genesis cover at that point, it's more like a show-off competition), I tried to approach it like it would’ve realistically been composed for the system. That meant making deliberate tradeoffs; limiting preset choices to save space, reshaping instruments so they could behave differently across octaves (for example the bass doubling as a more banjo-like voice in higher registers), carefully assigning PSG channels so nothing important was lost, and even a sacrifice in the form of unfortunately not being able to bring over the jaw harp. Even things like pitch behaviour had to be considered around how notes would actually be handled on the hardware rather than how I’d normally write them in a DAW, the upper and lower boundaries of what can actually be sent to the hardware is much different than FL Studio's piano roll. The only luxury I really had was the benefits of making it in a modern DAW and the foresight that comes with the track already being made that allowed me to change the balance of some parts to create something that sounded better to me. Ironically, the process of making this in the fashion I did made me appreciate the original track a lot more. Breaking it down into something the Genesis could realistically handle made the structure and ideas behind it stand out in a way I didn’t really notice before, and I ended up liking it far more after finishing the cover than I did when I started it.
