From Master's Degree to Exemplary Village Headman Mr. Jeab is the village headman of Village No. 11, Tha Pha Subdistrict, Ban Pong District, Ratchaburi Province. She is the village's first female headman. In addition to her role as a community leader, she is also a recyclable junk dealer and, most importantly, a highly skilled farmer. Her life journey is extraordinary. She earned a master's degree in political science and government. She previously worked for a company, but felt the cycle was repetitive. She quit to open a junk shop, eventually becoming village headman. As she recounts, "It was a time in my life when the previous village headman's term was nearing its end. I felt like I wanted the village to prosper. I wanted to use my knowledge and skills here, making it my hometown." Becoming a female village headman is not easy. The locals believe that only men should be headmen, and they were concerned about how small women could handle the heavy work of patrolling the village at night. However, with her determination and ability, she proved that she could do it. Mr. Jeab's Garden: A Model for Integrated Farming for the Community Jeab's garden covers 7 rai (1,000 square meters) and is a mixed agricultural garden, growing everything from coconuts, bananas, acacia pennata, and various vegetables. She explains: "I grow everything. Coconuts, bananas, and acacia pennata—all the vegetables we eat and use in our daily lives." The garden features a large pond for storing water for agriculture and raising a variety of fish, including tilapia, carp, and tilapia. It also serves as a learning center for visitors to observe the work and has a fun activity zone for children. Simple Agricultural Innovations Anyone Can Follow Jeab is an example of a modern farmer who applies technology and creativity to agriculture, such as: 1. Smart Farm System A smart farm zone connected to Wi-Fi, capable of automatic watering and soil moisture measurement. 2. Raised Vegetable Greenhouse A raised vegetable bed with a roof protects the vegetables from damage during heavy rains. The entire structure is made of steel frames and repurposed old tent frames. 3. Growing Vegetables in Styrofoam Boxes and Recycled Containers Inside the foam crates, a simple hydroponic vegetable growing system is used, using water instead of soil and adding natural microorganisms. 4. Economical drip irrigation system. 5. Production of fertilizer and animal feed from natural materials. Making compost from garden leaves mixed with cow dung and photosynthetic microorganisms. Chicken feed: Raising "Azolla," a miraculous aquatic plant with high protein content, reducing the cost of chicken feed, and mixing it with ingredients available in the garden. From distrust to community-wide change. At first, Village Head Jeab tried to persuade villagers to grow vegetables to solve their debt problems, particularly informal debt, but they were rejected. "I tried to persuade them, but they wouldn't do it. They said they were already tired from work. Why would you let them grow vegetables? Buying them is enough for 20-30 baht. There's no need to waste time growing them yourself." But Village Head Jeab was unwavering. She decided to take the plunge. "Why don't we try it ourselves? They'll see that we're doing the same thing... It's okay if others don't. We'll do it ourselves." Creating sustainable income for the community. As more villagers turn to agriculture, Village Head Jeab envisioned a sustainable way to generate income by opening a learning center. There are also various learning bases, with locals serving as instructors. In addition, instructors are invited to teach product processing to attract teenagers. Furthermore, Ms. Jeab emphasizes agro-tourism. Cultivating Positive Attitudes About Agriculture Ms. Jeab prioritizes cultivating positive attitudes about agriculture in children. She invites them to participate in activities in her garden, such as holding chickens, collecting eggs, and learning about growing vegetables. The Happiness of Growing The stories of Ms. Jeab and her community demonstrate that farming can truly bring happiness and sustainability. Ms. Jeab herself discovered a passion for farming. Farming not only generates income and reduces expenses for villagers, but also fosters community unity and, most importantly, creates happiness for both the farmers and those who consume safe produce. If you're looking for a career that creates happiness and sustainability, farming may be the answer. It doesn't require a lot of space. Even a backyard or fence can help you cultivate happiness for yourself and your family, just as Ms. Jeab has demonstrated.
