The 3 Questions Edwards Used To Expose False Conversions

Both sides quote the same Bible. Both sound right. That's not a you problem — that's a method problem. The Calvinism vs. Arminianism Decision Matrix gives you a structured framework to evaluate both systems and reach a verdict that's actually yours. 🔗 Get The Calvinism vs. Arminianism Decision Matrix → https://edwards1.bibletruthacademy.com/ Edwards would ask you three questions. If you cannot answer them with evidence—not emotion—he would say your conversion is likely false. Not "you need more assurance." Not "just trust harder." He would say the nature of what you love reveals whether you have been genuinely transformed or whether you are operating under a counterfeit experience that feels spiritually real but lacks the substance of true conversion. This is not cruelty. This is precision. The difference between true and false conversion is not how intensely you feel, how confidently you profess, or how publicly you perform. It is what you love. And love can be tested. Edwards used these three questions in pastoral counseling, in correspondence with anxious believers, and in his own systematic examination of spiritual experience. They are designed to expose the nature of your affections—not to measure their intensity, but to reveal their object and their origin. Counterfeit conversions often mimic true ones in external form. Both produce tears. Both produce professions of faith. Both can generate temporary moral improvement. The difference lies in the root. True conversion produces a new sense of the heart—a capacity to perceive and love divine beauty for its own sake. False conversion produces religious emotion and moral effort rooted in self-interest: fear of hell, desire for comfort, social belonging, or psychological relief. The first question targets transactional obedience versus affection-based holiness. Do you love holiness because it reflects God's character, or only because it keeps you safe from hell? Both the genuinely converted and the counterfeit convert will pursue holiness, but the motive is different. The counterfeit obeys because disobedience produces fear and obedience produces relief. The truly converted loves holiness because it reflects God's beauty, and that alignment is desirable for its own sake. If hell did not exist, would you still pursue holiness? That hypothetical exposes whether your affections are genuinely transformed or merely redirected by fear. The second question goes deeper: has your perception of God's character been transformed, or have you simply found a way to manage your terror of His wrath? The counterfeit convert experiences relief from fear but their view of God remains fundamentally the same—a terrifying judge whose wrath they have escaped. True conversion transforms how you see God. The God who was terrifying becomes beautiful. You perceive His holiness, righteousness, and glory as desirable, not merely threatening. You see His character as the highest good, not the danger you have narrowly avoided. When you think about God now, do you feel relief that you are safe from Him, or affection for who He is? The third question is the most invasive: has your conversion produced genuine, costly love for other people, or is your love still fundamentally self-serving? True conversion generates universal benevolence—a regard for the good of others that is not contingent on their usefulness to you or their capacity to reciprocate. This love costs you something. It inconveniences you. It requires sacrifice without guarantee of return. Counterfeit conversions produce what looks like love but is actually conditional self-interest. You love people who affirm you, who meet your needs, who fit into your life without disrupting your comfort. Can you name three people you have loved in the last month in ways that cost you something with no expectation of reciprocation? If you cannot, or if your love is always convenient and rewarded, then your affections have not been transformed. These questions are not designed for obsessive daily interrogation. Use them monthly, after relapse, or when doubt resurfaces. Answer with evidence, not feeling. If you cannot answer all three with observable fruit, do not spiral into despair. Cry out to God for the new birth. Repent of self-reliance. Trust Christ alone for righteousness. If you can answer all three with evidence, you have scriptural warrant for assurance—not because you have achieved perfection, but because the fruit of the Spirit is observable in your life. The test is not how you feel. The test is what you love.
