Audi had the biggest all-wheel-drive advantage in the entire automotive industry. Rally dominance, Le Mans victories, technology that was years ahead of the competition. Today, hardly anything remains of that advantage. In this video, we show you six decisions that have gradually eroded the quattro myth. It started with the technology: The mechanical Torsen differential, which once made quattro unique, was replaced in many models by cheaper Haldex systems. The quattro badge still adorned the rear – but the technology behind it was no longer the same. Then came the platform strategy. The A3 shared its platform with the Golf, and the Q3 moved closer to the Tiguan. The technological pioneer became part of the group's modular platform. In 2016, quattro ultra followed, a system that decouples the all-wheel drive when needed. Efficient, clever, sensible – and a break with everything the name had stood for for decades. At the same time, Audi abandoned the very stage on which the quattro myth was born: withdrawal from Le Mans, exit from the DTM. Meanwhile, BMW with xDrive, Mercedes with 4Matic, and Porsche with torque vectoring caught up. And in the electric age, one motor per axle plus software is all it takes. The bitter truth is: Audi hasn't gotten worse. The others have simply become just as good.
