TIGHT BRO'S FROM WAY BACK WHEN at The Smell with DALE CROVER (Melvins)
At the end of the Tight Bro's From Way Back When's summer 2000 tour, we parted ways with our drummer during an overnight drive from Phoenix to LA, leaving him at the Greyhound station in Indio. Around 6am, we pulled up to the house of Melvins drummer extraordinaire Dale Crover, whom had been expecting us about 4 hours earlier. Dale seemed non-plussed enough at our late arrival, so we pushed our luck a tad further. "Hey Dale! What are you doing the next few nights?" "I dunno." "Wanna play drums with us?" "Okay." And that was that! After a quick afternoon of rehearsal, we proceeded to play three shows around the LA area with the amazing freight train drive of Dale behind us. We worked up 4 of our originals and three covers. This video captures the last of these shows, at The Smell in downtown LA. The only bummer is the camera battery ran out before our cover of Shaking All Over. What I vividly recall is we got to the ending of the song, instruments stopped, vocals intoned the title phrase, and were ready to give it the final note sting, when Dale went into a bashing snare fill to bring us all crashing back into the riff...and this happened over, and over, and over again!!! The final round, guitars feeding back, he got up from behind the drums and ran a lap or 3 around the audience – in just his speedo, natch – before AGAIN slamming into that snare fill! An excellent time was had by all, and you'll just have to imagine that the set finished on this high note, rather than the half-assed cover of Tush that wraps up this video, meant only as a bit of filler while Quitty changed a string/swapped a cable/spilled crumbs down his amp, or whatever he was doing. No, I don't know who the super-fan was who kept finding her way onto the stage, but she sure was, umm...present. I believe this was filmed by Maureen Crover. She is definitely to thank for Dave's flashy headwear – also very, umm...present. Okay, enjoy! Because most viewers will wanna get right to the rock, this has been edited to begin there. For those into the punishment of 6 minutes of what may or may not pass as "witty stage banter" while Dave endlessly fucks with his tuning and/or tone before finally deeming everything set-ready, that has been moved to the end of the vid. Thanks to Eric Fundingsland for transferring the VHS. Check out his documentary on touring, Why Am I Doing This, which features a longer version of this tale and more: • Why Am I Doing This?
