He is one of the leading Polish artists creating scat songs, characterized by an onomatopoeic singing style. He was born in Łódź to a Jewish family, the son of Stanisław (d. 1994) and Anna Lichtman (d. 1995). He graduated from the 27th Icchok Perec High School in Łódź. In 1969, his parents fell victim to an anti-Semitic campaign by the Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR) authorities, forcing them to close their shop in Łódź (they sold leather goods), sell their possessions, and emigrate from Poland to Denmark. In 1960, he took second place at the Young Talents Festival in Sopot. In 1963, he founded the band Trubadurzy with Krzysztof Krawczyk, Sławomir Kowalewski, Jerzy Krzemiński, and Bogdan Borkowski. They were a popular big beat band combining elements of rock with Polish folk music. With the Trubadours, he released numerous hits, including "Kasia," "We Only Know Each Other by Sight," "Landscapes," "You Were Here," "Who Are You?" "Hey, Sobótka, Sobótka," "What Do We Know About Love," and "Come, Mom, for the Oath." In March 2025, Bożena Lichtman's book "Mój Trubadur z Kamienna" (My Trubadur from Kamienna) was published, self-published by the author.
