This North African market place is called Jemaa el-Fnaa and its the oldest market place of Marrakech in Morocco. This old market area and the adjacent market streets date back to the very beginnings of the city in 1070. The market place here is busy all day long but really starts to come alive as the sun begins to set and the baking warm temperatures of the day start to cool. This market is busy with both locals and tourists and the experience is a real bombardment of the senses. Voices, sounds, gestures, tastes, smells, every sense is overwhelmed when walking around this ancient location. Shop fronts and stalls are everywhere with people haggling and selling their products at every turn. Amazingly, the narrow streets adjacent to the square are not exclusively pedestrianised and you often find bicycles and motorbikes weaving their way through the thick crowds of people. Unfortunately there are levels of animal cruelty still present in the main square with monkeys on chains dressed up to pose with naive tourists and traditional snake charmers holding out snakes for photos. The sounds in this video are far from relaxing but offer an immersive experience to what it is like walking around this ancient and fascinating marketplace.
