And sometimes those risks pay dividends. But other times, those risks are liabilities. I bought the most expensive wood I have ever purchased, and resultantly ended up bringing powder post beetle into super secret wood room. The first and smallest piece of this "master grade" (cringe) quilted, big leaf maple from Vancouver Island only had modest signs of the beetle, a couple of pinholes on live edge off the slab, and it is with this small 24" long piece that I began the endeavour of designing an instrument that would maximize the potential of the wood. This ended up being a 16" scale length 4 string Mandola, with an additional 4 sub-bass harp strings for sympathetics and whatever else you'd like to use them for (I think perhaps slide might work) The piece was 90% completed when I decided to start diversifying my income and task stream with this very YouTube channel. And so the mandola got slipped into a drawer to be all but forgotten for almost two years, but now, in my series The Final Mile.
