Second Cut Silage Is Done… But We’ve Got Too Much Grass!

Second cut silage is finally finished here at Yorkshire Farming, but this year has brought a very different problem compared with last year. Last season we were struggling with dry weather and trying to make grass grow. This year, the grass has come back strongly, especially where we stitched in and direct drilled new grass seed. The drought-resistant grasses are showing up well in the second cut, and it looks like the overseeding has really worked. In this video we get the second cut grass cut, chopped, brought back to the farm and sheeted up ready for winter feed. We also look at mole damage in the fields, test the grass for nitrates using a simple nitrate test, and talk about whether we have taken the grass a little bit too early. The silage pit is now full, the second cut is done, and we still have the rest of the growing season ahead of us. It is a good problem to have, but it also means we have to think carefully about where any more grass is going to go. 00:00 A very different grass problem this year 00:48 Direct drilling and overseeding results 01:36 Drought-resistant grass showing in second cut 02:24 Getting the silage pit ready 03:59 Mole damage causing problems 04:46 Testing grass for nitrates 06:19 Last field of second cut 06:51 Silage pit filling fast 07:14 Second cut finished and sheeted 07:49 No room left for third cut 08:14 Time for tea #YorkshireFarming #silage #dairyfarming 🧢 Yorkshire Farming – Official Website & Merch 👉 https://www.yorkshirefarming.co.uk 📧 For enquiries, collaborations or business enquiries: [email protected]
