In the 1940s, during World War II, in the search for faster computers to intercept encrypted messages in German, the relay, an electrically operated switch, was replaced by the thermionic valve. This component, invented in 1904, was widely used in radios as it allowed control not only of the "on" and "off" state, but also the intensity of electrical energy. And that's the difference: an electrical component only reacts to the passage of electric current, like a light bulb that lights up. With an electronic component, we can regulate how much electrical energy passes through using electrical energy itself. In 1943, British engineer Tommy Flower built Colossus, the world's first programmable electronic computer. Then, in 1944, he made an even faster machine, the Colossus Mark 2. This accelerated data processing and, consequently, the breaking of codes used by the Germans. To give you an idea, the then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Winston Churchill, said that if it weren't for computers, the war would have lasted two more years!
