Funeral Service Of Sipho Samuel Ngwenya

The first democratically elected Mayor of Durban the honourable Mr Sipho Samuel Ngwenya was called home on the morning of the 7th of March 2021 after a long illness. He suffered with chronic respiratory sickness as well as lung disease. He passed on peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family. We appreciate the outpouring love and support we have received since the news broke. Sipho Ngwenya was the first mayor of Durban in democratic South Africa.  He served as mayor from 1994 to 1996. He was also the chairperson of the KwaZulu-Natal Local Government Association.  He will be honoured with the official City funeral.  The funeral will be held at St Faiths Anglican Church on Thursday the 11th of March 2021, only those who have been contacted will be able to attend the funeral in person. Streaming details will be shared shortly The official funeral will take place in compliance with the applicable Disaster Management Act regulations. Under these regulations, not more than 100 people will be allowed to attend the funeral. Streaming details will be shared separately Home visitation and prayers will take place between 12pm and 5pm on Wednesday the 10th of March. The maximum number of people will be limited to 10 per group. Night vigils are strictly prohibited and will not be held.  We kindly request that everyone maintains physical distance, wear masks, and follow the basic hygiene rules like washing hands and not touching the face, to reduce the chance of infection. These are difficult days. Losing a loved one at this time is especially hard. If we follow the required protocols and regulations, it is possible to stay safe from COVID-19 infection while we mourn the dead and support each other in our grief.
