Rachel de Queiroz's 107th Birthday Writer Rachel de Queiroz (1910-2003) was born in Fortaleza on November 17th. At the young age of 20, she wrote O Quinze, the book that would become the most important of her career and one of the great works of Brazilian modernism, which made its main contributions to the novel genre in the Northeast. In addition to serials, plays, and children's stories, the writer also wrote books such as Caminho de Pedras (1937), As Três Marias (1939), O Galo de Ouro (1950), and Memorial de Maria Moura (1992). In 1957, she received an award for her work from the Brazilian Academy of Letters, into which she was inducted, becoming the first Brazilian immortal twenty years later.
