Greg Wilson on Legend Club & the Birth of Electro in the UK
In this interview, DJ Greg Wilson takes us deep into the influential history of Legend nightclub in Manchester and its role in the emergence of Electro music in the UK. Best known for his groundbreaking sets at Legend and Wigan Pier in the early 1980s, Greg reflects on a unique moment in British club culture that helped shape what came next—from Hip Hop to House and the Hacienda rave era. Greg reveals that what I thought was Legend in 1988 had already changed to 5th Avenue, a completely different club. The original club, which featured a state-of-the-art sound system, sub-bass, and stunning lighting, was unlike anything else at the time. One of the artists, A Guy Called Gerald, even salvaged a mirrorball from the original venue! Greg is widely credited with introducing Electro Funk to UK dancefloors, and he describes how Wednesday nights at Legend became a hub for specialist Black music, with imports sourced from Spin Inn Records. Initially, there was pushback from some within the Black music community who saw Electro as soulless, but Greg knew the kids were connecting with it—deeply. He explains how this era was a hybrid moment, blending Funk, Soul, Jazz Funk, and Disco with the electronic future of Techno and Hip House. It was a misunderstood but vital transition in British dance culture. Legend wasn’t just another club—it was the epicentre of this shift. We talk about how the black club scene of Manchester (Legend, Playpen, Gallery) eventually helped spark the Hacienda’s transformation into a temple of dance music. Dancers like Foot Patrol brought their Jazz-Fusion-influenced footwork into that big open space, influencing the vibe of nights like Mike Pickering’s Nude. Greg also shares memories of Broken Glass, the breakdance crew he brought to the Hacienda in 1983, and how they won over the crowd—shifting perceptions and laying the groundwork for what came next. He also touches on the moment the rave scene exploded, leading to a mass exodus of the black crowd due to space constraints and a disconnect with the Ecstasy-fuelled vibe. He reflects on his early start at just 21 years old, building up Legend’s Wednesday night into one of the biggest in the country alongside Wigan Pier’s Tuesday. Greg’s influence was so profound that DJs across the UK were being asked to play the music he had introduced. From Planet Rock to Rockers Revenge – Walking On Sunshine, Greg highlights the key tracks that defined that moment and calls Legend his favourite club of all time. He’s spent years documenting this forgotten but essential part of UK club history on his Electro Funk Roots site—hoping to fill a major gap in dance music knowledge. ▶️ Subscribe for more interviews, and dive into Manchester’s rich musical past.
