Making Perry Mesa Pottery - The Apex of Prehistory
In the Agua Fria National Monument rests an incredible and monumental ancient civilization which is referred to as the people of Perry Mesa. The mesa tops are rich with hundreds of archaeological sites. Some sites consist of 300 plus rooms right on the edge of the mesa top. The culture(s) that occupied Perry Mesa are still unknown, and it seems the mesa tops were abandoned by 1450. While occupation was short lived, the density of sites reveals populations reached a very high number. Early pot hunters report finding mass burials where bodies were stacked on top of each other. Did a local disease sweep through? More professional archaeology needs to be conducted inside Perry Mesa in order for these questions to be answered. In this video we discuss the Perry Mesa culture, look and an original ceramic pot, and reproduce a Perry Mesa style jar. Enjoy!
