How India's Air Force Ranked 6th But Technically 3rd As IAF Beats China In Global Air Power Rankings

The Indian Air Force has secured the sixth position in the WDMMA Global Air Powers Rankings 2026. However, the ranking tells a much bigger story. Since four of the top five positions are occupied by separate branches of the United States military, the Indian Air Force effectively emerges as the world's third-ranked independent national air force. Even more significantly, India has outperformed China's much larger air force in the True Value Rating despite operating less than half the number of aircraft. Key Highlights WDMMA ranks the Indian Air Force sixth globally with a TvR of 69.4. India effectively becomes the third-ranked independent national air force. Four of the top five positions belong to different branches of the US military. True Value Rating evaluates capability, balance, logistics and modernisation rather than aircraft numbers alone. India operates 1,716 aircraft compared to China's 3,733 but scores a higher TvR. Rafale fighters, indigenous Tejas aircraft and strong logistics contribute to India's higher rating. Pakistan ranks 18th with a TvR of 46.3 and 879 aircraft. Pakistan's Navy and Army aviation do not feature in the global rankings. India's Navy aviation ranks 27th while Army aviation ranks 36th.
