Farewell to the 4th Cavalry Squadron
The Army's 4th Cavalry Squadron, which was formerly based at Connolly Barracks in Longford, was disbanded following a special ceremony held at Custume Barracks in Athlone last Friday, which also marked the disestablishment of the 4th Western Brigade. Formed in 1940, the 4th Cavalry Squadron was based in Longford from 1972 until 2009, when Connolly Barracks closed. Many of the soldiers attached to the unit hail from the local area.
