Kuala Lumpur to Penang by Train | Cost, Ferry to George Town & Airbnb Disaster

I travelled from Kuala Lumpur to Penang by train, but my first day in Penang did not exactly go to plan… In this Malaysia travel vlog, I take the train from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth, then get the ferry over to George Town in Penang. I wanted to show the full journey, including the station, train seats, food and drinks, ferry, timings, cost, and what it felt like travelling from KL to Penang without flying. You do need to book the train in advance, as seats are allocated and you are not just turning up on the day and hopping on. So if you are planning this journey yourself, definitely sort your ticket before you travel. The journey itself was one of my favourite travel days in Malaysia so far. It was quick, relaxing, easy, and such a nice way to see more of the country compared with flying. 🇲🇾 But when I arrived in Penang, the Airbnb situation turned into a bit of a disaster, and I ended up having to book somewhere else last minute. I moved to Gurney Bay Hotel on Gurney Drive in George Town, so this became part helpful Malaysia travel guide, part honest travel vlog, and part reminder that travel days do not always follow the plan. I have been travelling around Malaysia after selling my home in Scotland, and Penang was one of the places I was really excited to visit.
