An elderly tribal woman, she spent decades in the ashram of Sage Matanga, waiting patiently for the prophesied arrival of Lord Rama. When Rama and Lakshmana finally arrived during their search for Sita, Shabari’s joy knew no bounds. To ensure she offered only the sweetest fruit to her Lord, she tasted each berry before presenting it to him. While Lakshmana was taken aback by this apparent breach of ritual purity, Rama graciously and joyfully accepted the half-eaten berries.
