1990 SCCA National Championship (highlights)

After I uploaded the '88 highlights, (and 'spammed' the link elsewhere) a friend of mine from Europe asked me why I called The Runoffs a "shootout". It's actually a term from old Western movies made in the US. I'm sure most of you have seen the 'gunfighters in the street' thing in one of them. As far as why I used that term for motor racing over here, this is it. Unlike amateur racing in the rest of the world, club racing in the US isn't based upon marques, or displacement. Our biggest club (and for nearly fifty years, the only club over here) exists simply to provide opportunities for folks to go road racing in the first place. Thing is..the US is much larger than other countries. Like I've often said, the difference between Americans and Europeans is that an American thinks 1000 years is a "long time", and a European thinks 1000 miles (1600km? :D ) is a "long way". The reason the SCCA National Amateur Championships were (and still are!) fantastic motor racing is because drivers all over the country picked up points in their local races..and then only had one long tow to the Championship Race. Once they were at the final event..points were thrown out the window. Whoever wins the race is the National Champion. As we say in the US..."shootout". You win, or you lose. But at least you had the chance. I really don't know where or when we started using the term "The Runoffs" for the event. But I know that I loved it then, and I love it now. I read it in magazines when I was a child, and embraced it when I finally joined SCCA as an adult. And even though I was never fast enough or rich enough to participate as a driver, I am certainly stoked that I was able to participate as a marshal in many of these events. Yeah, some of the 22 races were a snoozefest. Others were epic. I'm glad I was there. IIRC, one of my older videos was an even shorter version of the results. I'm actually kinda stoked that this one is longer.
