Roundtable regulation of the platform economy in South Africa – Part 2

This roundtable was convened ahead of the International Labour Organization's (ILO) forthcoming Convention on the platform economy and featured contributions from the National E-Hailing Federation of South Africa (NEFSA), the Department of Employment and Labour, the Department of Transport, and the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI). Co-chaired by Ruth Castel-Branco (Southern Centre for Inequality Studies) and Pat Horn (Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing – WIEGO), the session brought together academic experts, workers' organisations, and government representatives to discuss the regulation of digital labour platforms and the advancement of decent work in South Africa. The discussion explored the opportunities and challenges presented by platform-based work and highlighted the importance of developing inclusive policy frameworks that protect workers' rights while fostering innovation in the digital economy.
