Japanese medical teams continuing their work on the ground are witnessing a harsh reality. ■ Six Days After the Earthquake: A 3-Year-Old Boy Miraculously Rescued Cheers and applause erupted from the rescue workers. Six days after the earthquake, on the 30th of last month, a 3-year-old boy was rescued from the rubble. According to Reuters, he was the only survivor reported that day and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Caracas, the capital. Two earthquakes exceeding magnitude 7 struck Venezuela in quick succession on the 24th of last month. Even now, a week after the earthquake, rescue efforts continue. To date, 1,943 deaths and 10,571 injuries have been confirmed, and tens of thousands remain missing. La Guaira State has suffered particularly severe damage. A man who lost his daughter: "This is my daughters' bed. My heart is breaking, but I can't cry now. Crying won't move the rubble." ■Witnessing the Severe Damage Hirodai Futsuki, a staff member of Peace Winds/ARROWS, a flying search and medical team, who is providing medical assistance on-site, witnessed the severity of the damage firsthand. "It's no exaggeration to say that buildings have completely collapsed on almost every side of the area. Citizens are participating (in rescue operations) as volunteers." The damage is widespread, and there is a shortage of rescue personnel. A man searching for his family: "I'm not an emergency medical technician, I'm not a firefighter, I'm not a paramedic. I'm completely different. Yet, I've pulled people out (from the rubble) here and there." Haruka Onaka, a staff member of ARROWS, says that shelters and medical facilities are not yet in place. "This is the area in this park that's currently being used as a hospital. Originally, this was a school, and mattresses are placed directly in the hallways and classrooms, with two or three family members sleeping on each mattress." Many people are forced to live in tents in parks and other public spaces, and sanitary conditions are deteriorating. Mr. Futsuki: "If someone contracts any kind of infectious disease, and it's airborne or transmitted by mosquitoes, it will spread rapidly." The Japanese government has announced it will dispatch a medical team from the International Emergency Relief Team, consisting of 42 doctors and nurses.
