A magic day up Muriwai - a few nice fish on the Kotare and tiki.....

With a great looking weather, swell and tide window, Stevo was keen to head up Muriwai for the day. My plan was to help him set the tiki then head off in search of fish with the Kotare. We were going to miss the perfect tide for the morning with Stevo having to travel up from Tauranga so the plan was to fish through that high and if I was lucky a shot at a few fish on that magic low tide which coincided with the late arvo. We were on the beach around half tide in and with a small swell it made it a little hard to spot those holes/troughs. After a good 10-15ks up I searched the shoreline for a spot while Stevo drove, and after stopping a couple times I noticed a spot where the waves disappeared into a nice little trough 50-60mtrs out - this was our spot for the day. After helping Stevo with setting the tiki I walked a few mtrs north where the waves hit the deeper water and flicked out my first bait, half pillie on a dropper was the go. Stevo had an order of fresh Kahawai for his second set and I knew that wouldn't be to hard of an ask, but I was here for snapper and trev's although I do like to also use fresh Kahawai. It didn't take long for my first bites and then hooked up, I knew Stevo would be happy as it was a nice big Kahawai just what he ordered. After a couple more bites and no joy with a hook up I went to a fresh cube of Kahawai - I do like to start with pillie being a lot more oily which helps getting the fish going then go to cubes of Kahawai. Flicking out the fresh Kahawai cube and with them on the bite more now I stood at the ready. There was defiantly plenty of fish mooching in this little spot and with a nice hit I struck and hooked up once more - this one felt more like a snapper and a not to bad a model. Using the waves I guided it up onto the sand and I had my first Muriwai snap, nothing big but a nice little fish for off the sand. I just love fishing Muriwai and more so when it's producing some nice fish. Flicking out a fresh bait I pretty much hooked up instantly, a bit smaller model around that 36cm I decided to give the bigger one some company in the bin. I noticed Stevo cranking up the tiki and although itching to get another bait out I knew I should go help him bring it in. Stevo managed 3 snaps on his first set, but with all the hooks de-baited we new having fresh Kahawai for the second would make a big difference. After baiting up and helping him set again, once on the soak I was back at my spot flicking out another bait. The fishing was pretty hot with lots of bites and after catching a few more smaller fish and fighting a big stingy for 10mins I hooked into another nice little red around 50cm - man I was loving it. I also managed a couple nice little Trevs to finish my surfcasting day off before heading back to help Stevo bring the tiki in. We ended up with a few more good fish on the last set and with a few nice snaps, couple carrots, couple trev's and a lemon shark on ice we called it a day - and a great one at that.... Tight lines
