How Rice Shaped Japan |
Every year, in the heart of Osaka, an ancient rice planting ritual unfolds at Sumiyoshi Taisha. At first glance, it is a prayer for a bountiful harvest. But behind the ceremony lies a deeper story about how the cultivation of rice helped shape Japanese society itself. Through shared labour, mutual responsibility, and a dependence on one another, rice became more than food. It became the foundation of community. From sacred rituals and saotome maidens to the neon lights of Dotonbori, this film explores the enduring relationship between rice, ritual, and modern Japan. Filmed in Osaka, Japan July 12th, 13th and 14th 2025 Shot on FUJIFILM XH2-S Edited on Davnici Resolve
