Peter: No. No, no, no, please, PLEASE… Two wands rise together. Two jets of light. The room fills with green for half a second, and then it is over. Peter Pettigrew's body lies on the floor. The room is still. Snape is slumped against the far wall, unconscious. Harry's Expelliarmus caught him square in the chest before the killing, when Snape tried to intervene, and he hit the wood panelling hard enough to stay down. Sirius stares at Peter's body. Lupin stares at his own hands. The children press against the wall. Nobody speaks. Lupin(strained): "We need to move. Now. Get the children back to the castle before anyone discovers what happened here." Sirius(hoarse): "What about Snape?" Lupin: "Leave him. He'll wake." Ron(uneasy): "We really gonna leave him here?" Lupin: "What choice do we have?" They emerge from the tunnel. Snape follows minutes later, furious, but stops mid-step when he sees Lupin transforming. The moon has found them. Snape throws himself between the werewolf and the children without hesitation, arms spread wide. Sirius shifts into Padfoot and slams the werewolf sideways, driving it toward the trees. Harry breaks for the lake when he hears Sirius yelp. Dementors swarm. Harry's Patronus fails. Then blazing silver light from the far shore. A stag scatters the Dementors. Harry collapses. Snape reaches the lake and carries them both back to the castle in silence. Harry wakes in the hospital wing. Ron is asleep in the next bed, leg splinted. Hermione sits between them, red-eyed but alert. Dumbledore stands at the foot of the bed. Dumbledore(gentle): "Harry." Harry(urgent): "Sirius... Where is..." Dumbledore: "He's alive. The Ministry is on the way to deal with him, however. As for Remus, he is resting. Deeply shaken." Harry: "Peter's body proves Sirius is innocent. They have to clear him." Dumbledore: "The Ministry never gave Sirius a trial, Harry. No trial means no conviction to overturn. Fudge has built twelve years of credibility on the story that Black is a murderer. A dead body and three children's testimony will not force his hand." Harry: "That's wrong." Dumbledore: "Yes. Profoundly. But the Ministry buries its mistakes. It does not correct them." Harry: "That's not justice." Dumbledore: "No. But it is how things work. Pretending otherwise puts Sirius in more danger, not less." Ron(muttering): "Bloody useless." Dumbledore: "Miss Granger, I believe you have something around your neck that might be useful. Three turns should suffice." Hermione's hand goes to the Time-Turner at her collar. Dumbledore: "I am asking nothing. I am merely observing that two of you are in this room, and that is one more than was strictly necessary for this conversation. You must not be seen. And you must save more than one innocent life tonight." The door closes behind him. The Time-Turner saves Buckbeak. Harry's Patronus saves Sirius. Buckbeak carries Sirius into the sky. Lupin resigns. Third year ends. The next day, Dumbledore sits behind his desk. Morning light catches the silver instruments on his shelves. Dumbledore: "Peter's body has been examined by Professor Snape and confirmed as human. The Animagus transformation is documented. The missing finger matches the official record of what was supposedly all that remained of Peter Pettigrew after Sirius's alleged attack." Harry: "So the proof exists." Dumbledore: "The proof exists. The political will to use it does not. I have sent a formal report to the Ministry. Cornelius will receive it, read it, and file it somewhere it will never be seen again." Harry: "Then what was the point?" Dumbledore: "The point, Harry, is that the truth is now on record. It exists in writing, witnessed and documented. The Ministry may choose to ignore it today. But institutions have long memories, and the truth has a way of surfacing when the ground shifts beneath the people who buried it." Harry: "This isn't right." Dumbledore: "No. It is not. But you will find, Harry, that the distance between what is right and what is possible is where most of the world's suffering lives. Sirius is safe. You have given him that. And one day, when the Ministry can no longer sustain its own lies, you will give him something more. But that day is not today."
