After independence, the jute industry was largely lost due to various negligence, invasion of synthetic products, and political shortsightedness. But time seems to be proving once again - the power of Bangladesh's soil is not over yet. In June 2025, India suddenly imposed restrictions on the import of raw jute from Bangladesh by land. India's intention was clear - to force Bangladesh to export jute using air or sea routes. This would have increased transportation costs several times, and Indian businessmen and port syndicates would have benefited. Many Indian analysts and so-called "Kha-Po" experts said at the time - "Bangladesh cannot function without India." Some again sarcastically said, "If we do not buy Bangladesh's jute, Bangladesh's farmers will stand in the way." But the reality is completely the opposite. The then Yunus government did not give in to this pressure from India and took a strict stance on raw jute exports. The BNP government that came to power later also maintained that policy. The result? Jute mills are closing one after another in various regions of India, including West Bengal. According to the Indian media Anandabazar Patrika, at least 14 jute mills have been forced to stop production in the last one month due to lack of raw materials. Because a large part of Indian jute mills have long been dependent on high-quality raw jute from Bangladesh. Since Bangladeshi jute is comparatively soft, strong and of high quality, it is easy to make bags, carpets, yarn and various exportable products with it.
