New Euro Banknotes Revealed ECB President Lagarde Shortlists 10 Future Designs

The European Central Bank has unveiled the 10 shortlisted design proposals for the future series of euro banknotes. The new designs are based on two themes chosen after public consultation: European culture and Rivers and birds. More than 365,000 Europeans shared their views in 2023, helping shape the themes that could appear on the next generation of euro cash. The European culture theme features major figures from Europe’s shared heritage, including Ludwig van Beethoven on the €10 note and Marie Skłodowska-Curie on the €20 note. The Rivers and birds theme focuses on nature, freedom and unity across borders, with images such as a wallcreeper and mountain spring on the €5 note and a kingfisher at a waterfall on the €10 note. ECB President Christine Lagarde invited Europeans to take part in the public survey and give their feedback on the proposed banknote designs. The survey is open until 21 September, while the final design for the future euro banknotes is expected to be chosen by the ECB Governing Council at the end of 2026.
