Hovercraft Returns to Lee-on-the-Solent | Around Gosport | June 2026

On 29 June 2026, a temporary summer hovercraft service between Lee-on-the-Solent and Ryde began operating, offering passengers a unique crossing of the Solent. This report follows the arrival of the hovercraft from Ryde, preparations for the inaugural departure from Lee-on-the-Solent, boarding of passengers and the first scheduled crossing of the new seasonal service. While this temporary route is a new addition to Lee-on-the-Solent, hovercraft have a long association with the Gosport area. During the 1960s, hovercraft services operated from nearby Stokes Bay, and the area played an important role in the development and testing of hovercraft technology. Today, that heritage is preserved at the Hovercraft Museum in Lee-on-the-Solent. This film has been produced in the style of a local news report using original location footage, natural sound and narration.
