South Carolina leaders mourn Lindsey Graham after 71-year-old Senator's shocking death

South Carolina political leaders from both parties are remembering U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham as an influential voice for the state following his death at age 71. Graham's office announced Sunday that the five-term Republican senator died after what the medical examiner said was a heart attack. The news prompted an outpouring of tributes from lawmakers, friends and former staff members, many of whom described Graham as one of the state's most consequential political figures. "I think I'm still shocked," said state Rep. Jay Kilmartin, R-Lexington County. "My wife woke me up before church and told me Senator Graham had passed away. I had no idea." Kevin Bishop, Graham's former communications director and a longtime friend, said he learned of the senator's death through a series of text messages after Graham was taken to the hospital.
