Every time I sit down to chat with Mr. Shi Kai, the conversation naturally expands from brush and ink techniques to broader topics. This time, we discussed a frequently mentioned yet rarely articulated topic—the literary cultivation of calligraphers and painters. Mr. Shi's views still carry his characteristic straightforwardness and insight. For example, he believes that if beginners focus too much on Yan Zhenqing's regular script, it can easily lead to a shrinking and mechanical structure of characters, even becoming an obstacle to future cursive script creation. He jokingly says that his "laziness" in his youth actually allowed him to avoid this rigid constraint. Regarding how to improve one's literary foundation, he didn't offer any lofty academic advice. He recalled visiting an old master with two pounds of lychees when he was young; the master didn't teach him calligraphy but instead told him to buy a cheap book, Poetic Rhymes*, and memorize it. In the book list provided by the author, besides *Mencius and Wang Li's *Poetic Rules*, he particularly recommended Pu Songling's *Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio*. He emphasized that it wasn't about seeking out the bizarre or supernatural, but about appreciating the rich and vibrant feel of classical Chinese language.
