CARVER'S TIP: Learn to Carve Backwards
For the traditional style of chip carving, you hold the knife with a fist and draw the blade toward yourself. After becoming proficient with that technique, I think every carver needs to learn the reverse cut, where you flip the knife backwards and cut away from yourself. I use this frequently to ensure I'm carving with the grain as much as possible for smooth cuts.
