Surface Electrodes (TENS) for Managing Urgency, Leaks & Pelvic Pain!
TENS Overview: Suprapubic and Tibial Nerve Congratulations on your new TENS unit! I'm Dr. Kelly, Doctor of Physical Therapy, and one of only 72 DOUBLE Board Certified Pelvic Health PTs in the whole USA!! I'm here to teach you everything your doctors, parents and teachers didn't, about your pelvis & your pelvic floor. Here's a brief overview of how to use surface electrodes for helping to manage your urinary urgency, frequency, leakage or pelvic pain (including pain post prostatectomy or due to prostatitis)! In case you are shopping for a unit, the following link will take you to the unit that I recommend. https://amzn.to/3TIibdA. I have recommended this unit for the past 16 years and have never been disappointed by it. (Friendly reminder that I am an Amazon Affiliate and I may make a small commission by any purchases made through links on this channel, or others. Know that I do recommend products I actually love and use, but you are welcome to choose your own products, of course). You will also need larger rectangular pads, generally, so this link (https://amzn.to/3r6z5pc) will take you to a 10-pack of electrodes. Your TENS unit has basic settings: 1. Intensity (the knobs) 2. Pulse Rate (Frequency) 3. Pulse Width: I recommend between 175 and 200 microseconds for pelvic; 100 microseconds for general muscle stuff. You will turn one knob up to 'on' and this will then allow you to change the settings. Choose 'constant' or 'continuous Here are the evidence-supported best settings for the TENS unit, for various conditions: 1. Urgency: 10-12 Hz 2. Incontinence 20 Hz, 30 min/day for 90 days is better than 75Hz. And 75 Hz was better than nothing (Liu, 2016) 3. Strength 50Hz 4 Pain 75-100Hz best for pain, including pelvic pain due to prostatitis Sikiru 2008 Sharma 2017 Talk to your doctor or primary care provider to see if the surface electrodes will be a good fit for you.
