CPM MACHINE- How to set up equipment and connect patient to device.
CPM MACHINE- CPM machines are used on patients post orthopedic surgery. These machines allow for passive movement of the extremity through a pre-set range setting. Nursing responsibilities Verify physician orders for CPM setting. ( Know the degree for extension and flexion, and speed). Know when the length of time for therapy and off therapy. Patient is usually on device 6-8 hours a day where therapy can be broken down to multiple sessions. Assess patient for pain and discomfort of the device. Usually ortho patients are encourage to move early and avoid giving heavy narcotics unnecessarily. We want patients up and moving and out of the hospital as soon as we can. At risk for skin breakdowns. Assess skin and support patient skin with padding that is created for the device Patients post procedure are at risk for clots. Assess for complications (indicators: pain, redness, swollen to site. SOB, decrease LOC, anxiety).
