Pangawit Pangawit comes from the root word ngawit/kawit, which means "to begin" (Anandakusuma, 1978:84). Pengawit in a song composition structure is the very first part, containing a line or melody that marks the beginning of the composition. ANGSEL is a Balinese dance term related to music and sudden or abrupt movements. In dance, angsel is manifested in movements that suddenly stop in a dance posture, or in walking in a rhythm that suddenly differs from the original posture. This stop in a dance posture is called angsel batis. Meanwhile, angselbuang, or angsel takjadi, is seen in the dancer's footwork, which appears as if the dancer is hesitant to find the right step. There are two types of angsel: angsel bawak (short angsel) and angsel lanlang (long angsel). In gending, the sudden change or end of the music is called angsel suwud. This angsel is a distinctive style in Balinese dance and music. If you'd like to know the difference between angsel bawak and lantang, please let me know in the comments section.
