Dr. Who : Mindwarp suite recreation by Art Crichton

Richard Hartley's score to the Dr. Who Trial of a Timelord story Mindwarp has been one of my favourite Dr. Who scores. Unfortunately, the master tapes to the score were lost which mean'tno isolation track on the DVD release of Trial of a Timelord. However, Richard Hartley re-recorded the score for the Blu-ray release so that there is an isolated track for the 5.1 surround version of the story. The re-recorded version is good but it sounds different to the original 1986 score due to the fact Richard Hartley gave away his synths and recording equipment which was used on the original 1986 score not long before the was commissioned to do the re-recording for the Blu-ray release. In a Dr. Who magazine interview, Richard Hartley mentioned that for the original 1986 score he used an EMU Emulator II, Yamaha DX7, Roland Juno and a Yamaha TX-816 plus various hardware reverb, chores and delay effects processors and guitarist Ray Russell on guitar. In the interview he went on to mention that due to giving away all his synths and gear that was used on the original he used NI Kontakt and a DX7 plugin running Logic 8 on a Mac mini for the re-recording. As I am a hobbyist electronic musician, I have a Yamaha DX7 and Roland Juno 60 in my synth collection so I challenged myself to recreate the original score to the way it sounded on the original broadcast and VHS and DVD releases before it was re-recorded for the Blu-ray release. I used samples from the Emulator II and recreated the sounds and synth textures on my Yamaha DX7 and Roland Juno 60. I then edited and arranged my recreation of the score on Logic Pro. My recreation isn't perfect but its a lot closer to Richard Hartley's 1986 original score than his Blu-ray re-recording is. This was hard work for me but I really enjoyed the challenge of producing, arranging and performing my recreation of the original Mindwarp 1986 score. For this video I merged all the cues that I have completed so far into a music suite. I have still finish the rest of the cues but when completed I will upload. I hope you enjoy. Art Crichton
