Ssangmun-dong is the neighborhood where writer Kim Soo-jung's "Dooly the Little Dinosaur"'s Go Gil-dong's house is located, and it's also the hometown of Deok-sun, the main character in the tvN drama "Reply 1988." It's also the hometown of Sung Ki-hoon, played by Lee Jung-jae in the internationally acclaimed "Squid Game," and the hometown of director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who directed the film. It's also a cozy, warm neighborhood that frequently appears in various movies and dramas. Wonseong Banjeom is a Chinese restaurant that has been in business for 44 years, since 1977, run by a Chinese couple. It became even more famous after Chef Jeong Chang-wook praised it on the "Jjajangmyeon" episode of "Choi Ja-ro Road Season 3." It's said to be particularly renowned for its ganjjajang and tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) in Gangbuk. I experienced Wonseong Banjeom as being incredibly cost-effective, and the fact that it used less oil made it easier on the stomach. I don't usually order ganjjajang unless I'm filming. When I was a kid, when money was tight, ganjjajangmyeon (double-sized portions) and ganjjajang (double-sized portions) were the same price, but since portions were more important to me, I always ordered the larger portions. However, filming Wonseong Banjeom gave me the opportunity to eat ganjjajang for the first time in my life, and it was incredibly delicious. It was not sweet at all, had just the right amount of oil, and was made on the spot without water or starch. For 5,000 won, the quality was so good I could eat several more bowls, and the jajangmyeon was also top-notch. The jajangmyeon is always so good because it's served mixed. Oh my. It was my first time eating japtangbap at a Chinese restaurant, and it felt like eating palbochae with rice. With over 15 different types of seafood and vegetables, I was able to enjoy a variety of flavors and textures. Wonseong Banjeom was a great value Chinese restaurant that satisfied all three elements: taste, portion size, and price.
