Rush - Digital Man bass and synths cover (with Guitars by Ian)
Hello again friends, it's time for me to post my next cover! And this one is one of my absolute top tier Geddy basslines - 'Digital Man' from 'Signals' (Recently turned 40!) Whenever people ask what the hardest Rush bass parts are, this one invariably springs to mind. Lots of fast runs and slightly awkward left hand shapes which have driven me nuts over the years of playing this song... I wish I could go back in time and tell a younger version of myself - 'one day you will actually be able to play a half decent run through of Digital Man'! Would have made me very happy (and saved me many hours of frustration!) to know that the practice was going to be worth it one day :) I wanted to do a collaboration with Ian who plays guitar in our Rush tribute band for a video for quite a while. This is the 2nd time Ian has played guitar for a video (the first being Countdown) but this time I got some video footage from him too, so you can all see his Alex Lifeson signature Les Paul in all its glory! We are planning on doing more stuff together and also plan to get the rest of the band (Andy on drums and Tamas on vocals) involved for some full band covers in the future. I'll leave a link here to Ian's guitar video when he uploads it for anyone who wants to focus in on the guitar part! The 3rd Wave patch was great fun to make for this song. I've not had a synth with an arpeggiator before so this was the first time I've been able to have a crack at making synth patches for Digital Man. The patch is just a split between the arpeggiator in the bass and a squelchy sawtooth in the right hand. The virtual analog stuff on the 3rd Wave sounds so good. It really is a pretty amazing synth and I'm really looking forward to share all my patches that I've been making for 80s Rush songs. Hope you enjoy this one. Definitely a favourite of mine to play Gear Used: Fender Jazz Bass (Geddy Lee Signature) with Rotosound Swingbass66 strings Tech 21 Sansamp - GED-2112 Trace Elliott GP12X Palmer PDI-05 Groovesynthesis 3rd Wave
