Stalking: A Story Like a Movie (A Conversation with Maciej Bieliński, Director of "Killing a Miss") Why is this story returning with renewed vigor almost 30 years after the murder of Agnieszka Kotlarska? What made it possible to retell it more fully now—without myths, simplifications, or romanticization of violence? In this episode, I speak with the director of a documentary series devoted to one of the most shocking cases of the 1990s. He discusses the behind-the-scenes work on the project, the long and complex production process, the analysis of extensive archival materials, and the most difficult narrative decisions: how to maintain balance between the stories of the victim, the perpetrator, and the social dimensions of stalking. The conversation also touches on the problematic narrative of the perpetrator, who in the 1990s was sometimes portrayed as a "smitten admirer." The director explains why he decided to include the accused's statements in the series and their purpose. There's also a dilemma of boundaries – how much space can be devoted to the perpetrator without making them the central character of the story? An important thread is the relationship with Agnieszka Kotlarska's loved ones, the process of building trust, and the question of whether the film can become a form of symbolic processing of trauma for them – including intergenerational trauma. This episode is about responsibility, memory, and the consequences of ignoring warning signs.
