MN 96: Esukārī Sutta - Your Kamma, Not Your Caste | 10-Minute Majjhima

At Sāvatthī, the brahmin Esukārī visits the Buddha and presents the traditional brahmanical view on caste: brahmins prescribe four types of service - everyone may serve a brahmin, but brahmins serve no one; three castes may serve a khattiya; two may serve a merchant; and only workers may serve workers. The Buddha responds with the "caravan leader simile": just as a caravan leader forces expensive meat on a poor traveler and demands payment without consent, so too brahmins impose their caste rules on the world without obtaining agreement. The Buddha rejects birth, beauty, and wealth as measures of spiritual worth - anyone of any caste can commit the ten unwholesome actions or practice the ten wholesome ones. What matters is whether serving someone leads to growth in faith, virtue, learning, generosity, and wisdom. This sutta presents the Buddha's systematic critique of the brahmanical caste system, teaching that spiritual liberation depends on one's actions, not on the circumstances of one's birth.
