KINERA Celest Gumiho - Novel Driver Technology

KINERA recently decided to enter the Planar frenzy, but instead of just taking an off the shelf unit and then adapting it to their needs , they went one better. Being known for innovative design in their earphones, they filed in August of this year under the Chinese Patent Registry number 202210501890.9, a new driver technology known as SPD - square planar driver. Let me explain in a simple manner; a conventional planar driver is comprised of a diaphragm that has imbeded on its surface a flat wire "coil" that will receive the electrical signal from the amp/DAC. This wire/diaphragm will interact with the fixed magnets on either side of said diaphragm and this will cause it to move, vibrating the air molecules and producing sound. The SPD also uses a diaphragm and magnets , but the voice coil instead of covering the full surface of the diaphragm, it's wound up on the center of the diaphragm. It will also receive electrical signal and cause the diaphragm to vibrate , creating sound. One can say it's a mix of a DD and Planar. But putting aside all the technical mumble jumble, how does the Gumiho perform? It's smooth sounding IEM with a nice warm bass performance, capable of an engaging thump and rumble. Midrange performance is dependant on what you like to listen; Female voices are a little tame and thus if you like that forward presentation it won't be present. Male voices however are correctly replayed, with a good sense of weight and tonality. Instruments are also for the most part well reproduced, with only a touch of colouring perhaps detracting away from the realism of string instruments. Treble performance is for the price good, it's non sibilant, decently detailed and capable of adding the right amount of sparkle and air to the performance of the Gumiho.
