Muscat, the capital of Oman, is a coastal city facing the Gulf of Oman. Since 1970, when Sultan Qaboos began his rule, Muscat has grown from a modest port into a modern administrative and economic center. Before the 1970s, Muscat remained relatively isolated, with trade limited to traditional routes. In the 1980s and 1990s, major investments brought paved roads, electricity, schools, and hospitals to the growing city. By 2020, Muscat's population exceeded 1.2 million, driven by both Omani nationals and foreign workers. Arabic is the official language, but English is commonly used in education, government services, and private business. The cityscape reflects a blend of Islamic architectural tradition and modern planning. Buildings are generally low-rise, with design restrictions introduced in 2011 to preserve visual harmony and cultural identity. Muscat's economy has long depended on oil and gas revenues. However, since 2015, Oman has promoted diversification, with Muscat seeing more growth in sectors like logistics, IT services, education, and retail. Despite its development, Muscat retains a quiet, ordered character. Public transport is limited, so most residents rely on cars.
