Embassy Near Iran Border In Turkmenistan, Ties With Azerbaijan | Israel Moves To Corner Tehran

Amid a serious standoff with Iran, Israel is trying to consolidate its ties with Tehran’s neighbours – Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan. Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen met the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, in Baku on April 19. The meeting came after the recent opening of Azerbaijan’s embassy in Israel in March. It is the ”first embassy of a Shiite Muslim nation” in Israel and also the first since Tel Aviv and Baku established relations in 1991. After meeting the Azerbaijani president, the Israeli minister flew to Turkmenistan on April 19. This makes Cohen the first Israeli minister to visit the central Asian state in nearly three decades. Cohen also inaugurated Israel’s embassy in Turkmenistan’s capital, Ashgabat, just 17 km from Iran’s north-east border.
