The End of Japan's Most Infamous War Criminals

WW2, JapaneseWarCriminals, Tojo, Unit73, PearlHarbor Iwo Jima. A sulfur-stinking rock in the middle of the Pacific. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi knew he was going to die here. He knew it before the first American Marine ever hit the beach. But here's the thing ... he refused to do the whole glorious suicide charge routine. You know, the one where Japanese officers would lead their men screaming into machine gun fire for about thirty seconds of honor. Kuribayashi thought that was stupid. Instead, he told his men ... kill ten Americans before you die. He built a nightmare underground. Eleven miles of tunnels. His soldiers would pop out of holes, kill Americans, and vanish back into the earth like demons. The Marines expected to take this island in five days. It took them thirty six. In March nineteen forty five, Kuribayashi stripped off his rank insignia and his medals. He grabbed a sword and led one final night attack in the darkness. His body was never found. The Americans searched everywhere. Nothing. He just ... vanished. A ghost who refused to become a trophy. He left behind letters to his wife and kids. And here's what's wild ... they're not filled with glory of the Emperor propaganda. They're the words of a guy who missed his family, who loved his country, but who absolutely hated the war he was fighting. This is the man who planned Pearl Harbor. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. The attack that killed over twenty four hundred Americans and dragged the United States into World War Two. So yeah ... the US Navy wanted this guy dead more than anyone else on the planet.
