How I make my Medium mix for Acrylic painting for Rosemaling - Art of Lise

Welcome back to Rosemaling with Art of Lise! In almost all of my videos, I talk about the medium mix that I use for my painting. This video demonstrates how I put my mix together. I have been using this combination of mediums for over twenty years and I am a creature of habit....it works for me, so I keep using it!! The Glaze medium helps with transparency and laying of the paint, the flow medium thins the paint and makes it "flow" more consistently and the retarder adds the open time needed when working with acrylic paint. This original combination was taught to me by Arlene Newman, a well known decorative artist. What is medium ? Medium is used in painting for a variety of reasons. From thinning the paint to make it flow better on a piece, to being a barrier between coats of paint, to extend the open time of acrylic paint, etc. Materials used for this video - Medium - 1:1:1 mix of Clear Glaze Medium, Flow Medium, and Retarder Medium ( all by JoSonja by Chroma Inc.) 2 ounce flip top bottle Here is more information about each of the mediums that I am using here as per JoSonja.com Clear Glaze Medium - "Clear Glaze Medium is a matte transparent acrylic glazing medium with several different uses. Use alone or in conjunction with Chroma’s Jo Sonja Artists’ and Background Colors. Apply as a light sealer prior to painting, staining or varnishing or as a barrier coat between layers. Mix with base color to seal as you basecoat. Use as a general painting medium for staining, glazing and other transparent effects. Flow Medium - "Flow Medium is added to Chroma’s Jo Sonja Artists’ and Background Colors and other Chroma’s Jo Sonja Mediums for thinning as needed for paint application or various techniques such as fine detail or linework and airbrushing. Add to colors when a smooth basecoat is required. Flow Medium will extend the drying time of the paint." Retarder Medium - "Retarder Medium is an additive to extend the ‘open’ or drying time of Jo Sonja Matte Flow Acrylics or Mediums. It may be used as both a painting medium and for various techniques such as antiquing. What is Rosemaling? Because of Norway's mountainous terrain and hundreds of valleys, the people of Norway had many dialects, native costume, traditions, ext. Norway also had a wealth of artisan traditions to draw from dating from the Viking era. When decorative painting styles reached Norway in the 1600's, it went into all this different areas and created over 15 different styles of Rosemaling, hence making it one of the most interesting folk arts to learn about and to paint. This style is traditionally painted on wood, but may be translated onto other surface areas. Terms of Use: This artwork is copyrighted by Lise Lorentzen.
