The Rothwell Framework for Evaluating AI-Assisted Dissertation Proposals and Dissertations

The Rothwell Framework for Evaluating AI-Assisted Dissertation Proposals and Dissertations The California State University (CSU) is the first public university system in the United States to formally adopt artificial intelligence (AI) across its 23 campuses. Building on that vision, California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) became the first CSU campus to launch an AI-focused scholarly journal on the CSU Open Journal Platform—the International Journal of AI in Pedagogy, Innovation, and Learning Futures (IJAIPIL). At the request of Professor Dr. Viktor Wang, a long-standing professor in the California State University (CSU) system and Editor of IJAIPIL, Distinguished Professor Dr. William J. Rothwell of The Pennsylvania State University prepared this presentation based on his recently published article in the journal. While many universities are currently focused on AI detection, Dr. Rothwell's pioneering framework takes the conversation one step further by providing dissertation committees with a practical framework for evaluating AI-assisted dissertation proposals and dissertations while preserving academic rigor, transparency, faculty judgment, and academic integrity. Dr. William J. Rothwell is an internationally recognized scholar, Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Academy Professor at Penn State. He has authored or edited more than 160 books and has lectured around the world, including at China's Double First-Class universities such as Peking University, Renmin University of China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Nankai University. We hope this presentation serves as a valuable resource for doctoral students, dissertation committee members, graduate faculty, and university leaders as AI continues to transform doctoral education. #ArtificialIntelligence #DoctoralEducation #Dissertation #HigherEducation #AcademicIntegrity #GraduateEducation #CSU #CSUSB #PennState #IJAIPIL
