Thyroid cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the thyroid gland. The thyroid is a gland located at the base of the throat, near the windpipe. It is shaped like a butterfly, with a right and left lobe. The isthmus, a thin piece of tissue, connects the two lobes. When a thyroid nodule is found, a thyroid ultrasound and a fine-needle aspiration biopsy are often performed to determine if there are signs of cancer. Blood tests are often performed to check thyroid hormone levels and thyroid antibodies to determine if there is another type of thyroid disease. There are four main types of thyroid cancer: Papillary thyroid cancer, follicular thyroid cancer, medullary thyroid cancer, and anaplastic thyroid cancer.
