TBIH2025 | Salt Museum of Messolonghi

Presentation of the Salt Museum of Messolonghi, winner of the The Activist Museum Award 2024 by the Research Centre for Museums and Galleries at the University of Leicester. The Salt Museum of Messolonghi, Greece, presents salt as a catalyst that has shaped history, economy, and everyday life. Funded solely through private resources, without state support, it has grown into a vibrant cultural hub where exhibitions, guided tours, and community events connect people with the heritage of salt and the biodiversity of the lagoon. With an activist spirit, the Museum integrates environmental care, inclusivity, and local development into its mission. Salt emerges not only as a mineral, but as a story of identity, resilience, and social change. Presented by Dimitra Karetsou, Director of Activities, Salt Museum of Messolonghi Born in Thessaloniki, Dimitra Karetsou studied Geology at the Aristotle University and Photography at ESP, later completing a Master’s in Education Sciences at the Hellenic Open University.
