It devoured animals to such an extent that it threatened the safety of the inhabitants of Montblanc. To prevent the beast from attacking, it was decided to free a resident from it each day. A lottery was held among the population, including the royal family, and as luck would have it, the chosen person was the king's daughter. As she was about to be swallowed by the dragon, a knight appeared and saved her, mortally wounding the dragon. It was Saint George. A rosebush of red roses grew where the dragon shed its blood. Since then, the Catalan tradition of men giving a rose to their beloved has been maintained. Each year, coinciding with Saint George's Day (April 23), Montblanc's Medieval Week is held. For two weekends, the town relives its past, and the streets, squares, and towers of the city walls display stately flags and banners. A host of events are held that transport the audience back to the Middle Ages: the reenactment of the legend of Saint George, scenes from everyday life, a medieval dinner, a firefight, a medieval market, a reenactment of the Catalan Parliament, etc. To the north, with Pira, Barbará, and Blancafort.
