BC DOCUMENTARY: UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS CALLALOU by DR. ILIVE PELTIER
#Subtitle: Coming Soon This documentary journey began in 2022, following the receipt of a grant from the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands (CFVI). The initial phase centered on research exploring the mosaic patterns that define the population of the United States Virgin Islands. What emerged from that process was both powerful and unexpected: an overwhelming willingness from individuals across our community to share their lived experiences, histories, and truths. Recognizing the depth and value of these narratives, we made a deliberate decision to begin documenting these stories and the everyday cultural expressions that shape our islands. In 2023, we were honored to receive a second grant, which provided the resources to fully step into this vision. This phase allowed us to intentionally capture the voices of people from across the Caribbean and the United States who have come together to form the rich, dynamic cultural medley that defines our territory. From this intention, the documentary Virgin Islands Callalou was born. The name itself is deeply symbolic. Callalou, a traditional one-pot dish, represents the blending of diverse ingredients into a single, nourishing whole. In the same way, the Virgin Islands stands as a living example of cultural fusion, where identities, traditions, and histories intertwine to create something uniquely resilient and beautiful. At its core, this documentary seeks to foster a deeper awareness of Sustainable Education and Education for Sustainability. It highlights the importance of preserving cultural knowledge while building systems that allow our communities to thrive for generations to come. This project ultimately aims to bring clarity to a powerful truth: when a mosaic population is rooted in strong cultural foundations and supported by sustainable practices, it has the capacity to endure, evolve, and flourish for decades to come. We extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Ilive Peltier, Damian John Baptiste(Videographer), Dr. Correen Celestine-Edwards, and, most importantly, the people of the United States Virgin Islands, whose stories, spirit, and contributions made this work possible. © 2026 Beunec Consulting LLC.
